Snorkeling: Viewing the captivating underwater scenery

Snorkeling has always been the best activity especially during summer for most people. It is just a simple yet an amazing activity of floating in the water and breathing through a snorkel while you view the captivating underwater scenery.

1

Aside from the fact that snorkelling has always been an enjoyable activity; Liloanons say snorkelling is best done in the captivating waters of Tagbak, Liloan, Southern Leyte.

Tagbak Marine Park is located at the mid-center of the sea. It is surrounded by shallow and deep cool waters and green hills, with big wood and coconut trees along the shoreline. Colorful flags can also be seen in the park. No residents live near the park, so if people wanted to stay there, they bring everything they need.

2

Thirty years ago, the site was privately owned and managed by a Liloanon. In July 18, 2014, the local government unit (LGU) officials led by Mayor Shirlita Chong and tourism chairman Manuel Uy-Oco decided to buy and improve the place, replacing its name from Puy-aw, to Tagbak Marine Park.

In the place, some beautiful underwater creatures in hues can be seen such as verdant sea weeds, darting fishes, creeping crabs and bristling sea urchins. The bewildering sights have always attracted people.

3

The site is 20 meters above sea level and is half kilometres away from the shoreline. As of now, the cottage is only good for less than 20 people, with an entrance fee of P50 per person.

During summer, between April and May, more than 300 people including local tourists visit the snorkelling site. The tourism committee only allowed 5-6 hours of stay and first comers are the ones to stay first the cottage, with a rental fee of P500.

Before going to the place, one should have first a reservation at the tourism office located near the Liloan covered court, with a short briefing of the do’s and don’ts, since the place is a marine-protected area.

The easiest way to reach the place is through a 5-minute tricycle ride from the town center, which is just 5 kilometers away.

Upon reaching the shoreline, one can have a 2-minute ride on a boat or pump boat which has a fare of P20-P30 per person, going to the park.

4

Ariane Balones, a 20-year old Liloanon, said Tagbak is known for best diving and snorkelling site in town.

“Since the area is very attractive because of its cool waters and unique location, many people choose to stay in the place,” she said.

This year, the LGU and tourism committee proposed a project plan for the park. They plan to put up a wooden bridge, as passage way from the shoreline going to the marine park for easy reach and entirely widen the cottage park, for a bigger number of visitors’ convenient stay.

Tourism officer Eugenio Tahil said the project will possibly start within this year but still depends on the budget’s approval and release and will possibly be completed by 2017. In the site’s initial improvement, the tourism council has accumulated an income of more than P2, 500 this year’s summer.

According to Mr. Tahil, when one decides to learn snorkelling in Tagbak, it is necessary to put on equipments first, starting with a mask before jumping into the sea for safety.

“I’m always wearing the equipments for safety. It’s more difficult when you’re in trouble there, because you’re kilometers away from the town center,” said snorkel-lover Pedro Lozada, a 30-year old Liloanon.

Catching any of the marine life underwater during snorkelling is strictly prohibited by the tourism council. It’s one way of avoiding any trouble during the short stay underwater.

Beautiful fishes, jellyfishes, sea urchins, sea horse, sharks and other marine creatures can be seen. Panic not when dangerous creatures are seen in the place.

Mr. Tahil also reminded snorkel-lovers to avoid talking when one is still in water for it will make breathing difficult. Giving of simple hand signals for easy communication when in the water is of help to avoid distress.

Before attempting another dive, Mr. Tahil suggested for one to rest at least 4 to 6 minutes at the cottage so that the body can return to its normal oxygen level. When feeling dizzy, fatigued or whatsoever, the best thing to do is to discontinue first snorkelling and rest at the cottage until energy is regained.

Refridge-a-nature!

“The best remedy for those who are afraid, lonely or unhappy is to go outside, somewhere where they can be quiet, alone with the heavens, nature and God. From the gorgeous shorelines to the tall coconut trees along the way, the surrounding water is shallow and the sand is finer and brighter than most beaches in town. The beach always captivates someone’s heart, making them visit the place over and over again.

The place is within easy reach from Tacloban or Eastern Visayas through riding a van or bus to Himay-angan, then going to Molopolo.

However, it usually takes 4 hours by bus from Maasin City to Himay-angan, followed by a 10-minute motorcycle ride going to the beach. From town proper, a 10-minute motorcycle or tricycle ride can be done to reach the beach site, which is 15 kms away.

Some seven comfortably-made cottages are for rental, which are made of woods and dry coconut leaves. The cottages’ rent ranges from P100-P200 depending on the structure.

A Molopolo beach caretaker, 40-year old Emi Pintuyan said that in her many years of residing in the area, more and more people still visit the place.

More than 500 Liloanons are currently residing in the said village. Also, the area is dotted with small convenient stores for convenience of tourists.

The site was discovered and beautified by Molopolo residents 30 to 35 years ago. In the place, another two small islands can be seen.

Tourism officer Eugenio Tahil Jr. said that just this year’s summer, more than 300 people including local tourists have visited the famous beach in town.

Aside from beach bumming and party hopping, several exciting activities can be best done in the place such as sail boating, skimming, fishing, island hopping and swimming.

People who love skim-boarding thrust the skim board onto the fine sand just after the wave breaks, hop on and glide across the foamy water. However, there are no skim-board rentals in the beach. People who love skim boarding bring their own board there.

With natural reefs and perfectly dive site, Molopolo is also good for amazing dive adventures. The underwater world amazes most people by simply diving in deep into the water with a snorkel and mask.

Fishing in the sea can also be done but fishing nets are strictly prohibited by the residents because it is one of their ways to conserve the oceanic creatures.

Watching the beautiful sunset in the beach is also a relaxing way to wind up the day. A breath taking sight to behold, in a place best to spend life’s twilight moments is indeed, a perfect haven for most people.

Most people love the refreshing and peaceful ambiance, making them appreciate the beauty of nature in the place. Calm waters surrounded by the attractively grown trees satisfy most peoples’ stay in the beach. Some only visit the place for picture taking.

LILOAN: Island of Adventure, A Place to Visit

LILOAN, SOUTHERN LEYTE, PHILIPPINES- Founded in 1820, Liloan begun its ecclesiastical work in 1918. Its territory, which is in the northern part of Panaon Island, is composed of 24 baranggays (villages).

The island is actually considered as a landmark in World War II because it was in the said town that the Japanese and the liberation forces first fought from October 20 to 25, 1944.

The place has a “wawa” (strait passage), which connects the mainland of Leyte and Panaon island on the south. It looks like a blind diverticulum except that on closer distance where you can see a tiny passage.

Wawa is famous for its amazing swirling currents from turbulent minute whirlpools when high tides rush in. The minute whirlpools are called “Lilo,” and Liloan derived its name from it. Residents living in town are called “Liloanons.”

The town is reachable from Manila, which is more than an hour travel via plane bound first to Tacloban, and then from Tacloban to Sogod, then to Liloan.

From Cebu or Bohol, it would take 6 hours of travel via ship going to Hilongos Leyte, then from Hilongos, ride a bus bound to Sogod, then to Liloan.

From Tacloban or within Eastern Visayas, the place can be easily reached through a bus or a van which takes 4-6 hours of travel.

The town’s main attraction is the drift dive in the channel under the Liloan Wawa Bridge. It is an exhilarating and challenging dive in strong alternating currents with rich coral formations and many caves along the way but it is recommended for experienced divers only. It is home to people who love simple, serene, peaceful and laid-back life.

The lovely mountain ridge in Fatima village could also be the best place for people who want to relax and breathe some fresh air for it is surrounded by tall trees. Along the way are coconut trees that give shades and fresh coconut juices, with a very sweet and refreshing taste.

A 40-year old Liloanon, Lydia Malubay told me that the local kakanins (tidbits) she loves to eat is the calamay (sticky sweet delicacy) and suman (rice cake).

“For beach outing, sinugbang isda (grilled fish) and sinugbang karne (roasted meat) are foods that are best to eat,” Ms. Malubay said.

Where to go when you’re sad and blue

Life is not just about experiencing happy moments. According to Rick Warren of The Purpose Driven Life, you feel like you have an easy life when things are going great-when God has provided food, friends, family, health and happy situations. Most people definitely don’t know where to go and whom to talk to in times when you’re sad and blue.

When you experience heavy situations, it leads you to sadness. You may probably think that God is angry with you that He’s not doing good things anymore in your life. No, you’re definitely wrong. It’s just a test of Faith.

DSC04623

Facebook.com/KasterSaliente

The solution to that is just so simple but is impossible for many to do. All you have to do is go to a perfectly peaceful place like beach where you could see the radiance of sunset in the afternoon. With the place alone, you will be reminded of God’s goodness that He has provided fresh air for you to breathe, chirping birds, clear waters and green hills to enjoy and even the shining sun for you to live completely.  There, pour out your heart to God. Unload every emotion that you’re feeling. Talk to Him in prayer as if you’re talking to Him in person. Say it all to Him what you want to say.

DSC04625

By that, you will be certainly relieved from bad thoughts and feelings. You’ll surely have a peace of mind after all.   All you need to do is trust Him for He has promised that He will never Leave you nor forsake you.
